Fishing for Survival.
Posted by
on“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” -Chinese Proverb
Our spin on this timeless proverb is – fishing for survival. Or, survival is fishing.
When the “stuff” hits the fan and you need to procure emergency food – survival food – for yourself, your family and/or your community, nothing beats a load of good, nutritious fish as that go-to food source.
Of all the top survival skills to learn and practice on a regular basis – fishing and the ability to fish, in our opinion – needs to be on everyone’s top 5 survival priority skills list. If you do not know how to fish, then learn to fish. If you need advice and tips on how to fish, please reach out to us and we will guide you in the right direction. If you already know how to fish, then practice the skill as oft as you can – because it really can save your life one day – especially when the available food sources at the local grocery have long been wiped out on the heels of some catastrophic event.
When you possess that skill set you will never forget it, and you will be able to feed yourself and your family for a lifetime, regardless of circumstances – whether you’re stranded near a mountain stream or lake, or just trying to get by while between jobs – being able to fish will keep you ahead of the calorie game until your circumstances improve.
Now, where to begin? There are literally countless lures and flies on the market to choose from – from catching anything from bullheads in a freshwater pond to striped bass in the salt water – and we are going to narrow that broad range down a bit to better fit the survivor’s realistic scenario on what they will most likely encounter in a survival situation, those being – trout, kokanee and salmon.
These fish are numerous and abundant in many local waters throughout the Pacific Northwest and meet the standard for both the survivor caught out in the mountains for a night or two in need of some grub, to the person who lost a job and just needs to get by until better times. And let’s face it, as hard as it may be – they are all very enjoyable to target for sport as well!
The lure options we offer here, in our opinion, are the best options for catching an abundance of these types of fish – to fishing mountain streams or lakes for brook and rainbow trout to trolling larger lakes for kokanee salmon – this great selection of gear will get the job done time and time again. They will not let you down in that survival situation when needing to ‘catch the fish’ is not just for sport, but rather the difference between going hungry or not.
All the lures and flies we offer come with detailed instructions on how to use them in various conditions with options of color and ‘rigged’ or ‘un-rigged’ to better help you in the field. As well, all our flies and lures are 100% made in the USA products!
